Night Geometry

Night Geometry

I've always liked the idea of Night Geometry. The way bodies fit so snugly together. And not necessarily sexually.

So I was delighted when I first read A. L Kennedy's short story entitled just that, Night Geometry, and wanted to include an extract here on my new site dedicated to my fascination with patterns.

However, I was rather disappointed on finding the original story to find that the section I wanted to quote doesn't go into nearly as much detail as I remembered. In fact it doesn't even mention the phrase "night geometry". That comes a few paragraphs later when things in the story start to change, hinted at beforehand by the change of the geometry itself.

Nonetheless, here is the tiny part of the story that introduces the idea of Night Geometry to the reader.

"It was strange. However we flopped together, however haphazardly we decided to come to rest, the fit would always be the same.

His right arm, cradling my neck.
My head on his shoulder.
My right arm across his chest.
My left arm, tucked away between us with my hand resting quietly on his thigh. Not intending to cause disturbance, merely resting, proprietary."

P.S. While searching for a suitable image for this article I came across an amusing little video, How To Do The Hug And Roll.
